I've been pushing myself hard to get over what happened when I was captured by bandits. To do that I have to learn how to survive in this world, to protect myself. Every chance I get I go out scavenging, and I go with the best—Alan. He's an adrenaline junkie, a killing machine who gets off on pitting himself against the worst the apocalypse has to offer. He's also after me, and that scares the hell out of me because I know I'll never be enough for him. He's going to keep going after that rush until one day he doesn't come back.

I know all there is to know about surviving, except how to survive without Skylar. From the moment I set eyes on her in Trade Town she's been under my skin, and I haven't found any way to dig her out. She makes me want a future, want more than just the killing and getting past the next challenge. When I'm with her I don't need to go back out there and push myself to the limit just to feel alive. I'd do anything to protect her, but she's determined to prove that she's ready to face anything the apocalypse throws at her. How am I supposed to save her from herself?
