《左傳》自宋以來，列於「五經」，形成國民常識之一部。故雖非專門史學家亦當一讀。其中嘉言懿行，有益修養及應世之務者不少，宜闇記或鈔錄之。《左傳》文章優美，其記事文對於極複雜之事項，如五大戰役等，綱領提絜得極嚴謹而分明，情節敍述得極委曲而簡潔，可謂極技術之能事。其記言文，淵懿美茂，而生氣勃勃。後此亦殆未有其比。又其文雖時代甚古，然無佶屈聱牙之病，頗易誦習。故專以學文為目的，《左傳》亦應在精讀之列也。
