This was Charlotte Brontë's first novel. The Professor is the story of William Crimsworth, he makes many wrong choices in choosing his life career, but finally ends up as a professor teaching English at an all-boys school and teaches part-time in the neighboring girls' school. It's set mainly in Brussels, where William runs into a variety of trouble with the school mistress and some of the female students in the school.
